Fantastic Golf: The Club at Flying Horse

Thrilling Golf at a European-Resort-Style Golf Club

Any visitor to Colorado Springs will find a plethora of activities.  In fact, the Pikes Peak Region offers more than 55 attractions including trains, museums, parks, zoos, hiking, and even cliff dwellings.  While experiencing attractions from the Rocky Mountain Food Tour to Adventures Out West Foothills and Garden of the Gods Jeep to touring the US Airforce Academy, we also delight in playing golf courses on our trips.  Being Floridians, playing in Colorado Springs brings the challenge of hilly courses and adapting to the elevation of over 6,000 feet.  Playing The Club at Flying Horse is both a fantastic and thrilling day of golf, despite a rain shower.

The Club is located in a most impressive luxury community.  It features a European-resort-style Golf Clubhouse, an impressive Athletic Club and Spa and a wonderful dining at The Steakhouse at Flying Horse.  Additionally, The Lodge at Flying Horse is recognized as one of Colorado’s finest luxury boutique hotels.  Holding the coveted AAA Four Diamond Hotel designation The Lodge continues to be one of Colorado’s most desirable boutique resort hotels and meeting destinations. It offers traditional lodging and Villas.  The hotel features a “Rocky Mountain Tuscan” style.  With two premier golf courses, The Club at Flying Horse offers its member fantastic golf in the magnificent landscape of Colorado Springs.

The Courses
Opening in 2005, the Original Course designed by legendary golfer and course designer, Tom Weiskopf, still offers an amazing golf experience.  In October, 2019, the Flying Horse North opened designed by golf course architect Phil Smith.  These are two private courses are available to Signature Members and Lodge Guests for play.  Today, we are playing the Weiskopf course and are exciting to see if we can meet the challenges of this fantastic course.  This par-72 course stretches to 7,318 yards from the tips with a rating of 74.5 and slope of 137.

Front Nine Weiskopf Course
After warming up we prepare to take on the Weiskopf Course.  Selecting the preferred tees for our handicaps we are ready for the challenge.  Starting on No. 1 a par-4, we see the beauty of this well-maintained golf course.  The fairways are in pristine condition as are the greens.  The front nine is very spread out with a lot of hazardous and waste areas on and between holes.  Plus the cart path takes us under the road several times as we go from hole to hole.  We have to pay close attention to signage as we proceed to the next hole.  The layout and challenge of each hole is unique.

Playing No. 6, after our tee shots we find a split fairway that is initially confusing.  Decisions? Decisions?  Selecting our shots we delight in the excitement of this hole.  The green is HUGE!  Plus it is very scenic elevated hole with views of mountains.  Continuing on the front nine we have fun playing each hole.  There are plenty of hazards that come into play keeping us on our toes.  Often it’s too late by the time we see the hazard.  The front nine defintiely keeps us our toes and we enjoy the holes, the challenge and the scenery of the mountains.

Back Nine Weiskopf Course
As we make the turn, the weather begins to change.  We see the clouds forming and rain over the mountains.  Umm!  Will it pass us by?  Not today, just as we finish No. 10 a scenic par-5, with views of the US Air Force Academy, the rains begin.  Luckily, we are near a shelter and decide to wait it out.  The radar on the cell phone, shows it should pass in about 20 minutes.  Hurrah!  The storm clears and we set off to tackle the remaining holes of the back nine.  The back nine holes are closer together and more parallel, making it easy to go from one hole to the next with a better pace of play.  Once we think a hole will be easy we find a new challenge.

On No. 13 a par-3, Richard makes a great drive to land on the green.  It is still a long putt to the pin.  Hurrah, it’s a birdie!  For us, birdies are always exciting.  Going to the following holes, we appreciate the beauty of each hole.  At No. 15 a par-4, the ladies tees are 182 yards.  Reaching the green in 2, my putt for birdie is about 3 feet.  Awesome!  I get a birdie!  Don’t get too proud as the next hole a par-3 adds extra challenges of hazards to carry and deep bunkers.  No. 18 is a great finishing hole, slightly uphill with the Lodge and Clubhouse off to the side on this par-4.  It is a great day of golf at The Club at Flying Horse.

The Steakhouse at the Flying Horse
After golfing The Club at Flying Horse, we are off for drinks at The Steakhouse at Flying Horse.  An upscale restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner for The Lodge at Flying Horse’s guest, as well as, non-club members.  It’s Happy Hour at the Steakhouse.  Perfect for us to relax while we relive the ups and downs of our round of golf sipping local beer and the house wine.  Needing some nourishment we ordered the Hummus Tray.  Yes, appetizers are on Happy Hour, too. (4pm-6:00pm).  The Hummus Tray is awesome.  In addition to the tasty hummus with warm pita bread, it also has an array of veggies and olives.  Additionally, the Steakhouse has magnificent views of the golf course and the Front Range. It has outside dining also.

It’s a fantastic day of golf at The Club at Flying Horse.  An impressive, challenging and fun golf course.  Golfers of all levels will find excitement on this scenic and pristine course.  Stopping for drinks and a tasty appetizer is a great finishing touch to our day.
